1. What is a Coordinated airport?

An airport where the operational demand by airlines exceeds the capacity of the airport infrastructure, making it necessary to apply procedures that determine the priority of each requested flight to be granted a slot. The Slot Coordinator is responsible for this task, applying the relevant regulations and industry recommended practices.

2. Do you need a slot to operate at any of the Spanish airports, or only in those designated as Coordinated?

The slot concept only applies to those airports declared as Coordinated. Airports declared as Schedules Facilitated refer to recommended times instead of slots, and they must be also applied. Airports declared as Non-Coordinated require only that the operator notifies the airport and the ground handling services about its intentions.

3. How far in advance should a slot be applied for?

In principle, as soon as the operator can confirm to the Slot Coordinator all the necessary flight details (i.e. date of operation, time of operation, aircraft to be used, etc.). However, it is very helpful to know about the specific periods established by the industry for each season which refer to the initial submission and allocation processes. This can be a key factor in increasing the options for the airline to successfully obtain the requested slot.

4. Which timeframe applies for slot changes?

As from the moment that a slot has been allocated to an airline, it can be changed as often as necessary. Requests for changes should always be made to the Slot Coordinator (AECFA). The deadline for changes is generally the office closing time on the last business day before the day of the operation (for exceptions to this rule, see page 3 of the document Information for slot requests at Spanish airports, in the Library section).

After this time, the operator can contact the airport directly (see the list of competent units on page 5 of the document mentioned above) to try to obtain an operational clearance allowing an alternative in real time to the slot allocated.

5. Which moment in the operation corresponds to the time in the slot allocated?

The slot time coincides with the time when blocks are placed or removed in the aircraft's parking position, so it is not related to its take-off or landing time. It is the responsibility of the airline to take into account the time taken by aircraft taxiing from the runway to the apron (and vice versa) when applying for the slot, both for arrivals and departures.

6. Does the Slot Coordinator determine the capacity of airports?

No. The Slot Coordinator is responsible for distributing, as efficiently as possible, the capacity declared by the Directorate of Civil Aviation, in accordance with the detailed analysis of the available capacity carried out by the airport managing body in cooperation with the providers of air navigation services concerned.

Yes, in terms of the procedures and priorities applied, although there may be small differences depending on the characteristics of each airport: type of traffic and season. For instance, depending on the declared capacity of each airport, there may not be restrictions on the terminal (or these may be of very different nature), there may be only some restrictions applicable on the runway side, it may be coordinated using the fixed hour or rollling hour methodology, etc.

8. How are runway restrictions per slot defined in Spain?

The runway capacity ‘per slot’ is the shortest time restriction applied in the slot coordination process. For the Spanish airports, this restriction corresponds to the “number of operations every 10 minutes”. The 10 minute intervals considered for calculations are always, for every hour of the day, between multiples of 10 (i.e. from the start of the hour to minute 10, from minute 10 to 20, from 20 to 30, 30 to 40, 40 to 50 and 50 to the start of the following hour).

Slot coordination only allows for schedules with multiples of 5 and 10 minutes (e.g. 09:10 or 09:15), but never intermediate values (e.g. 09:13). For the purposes of validating the restrictions, all the flights coordinated in the same ten minute interval (e.g. 09:10 and 09:15) count as part of the same slot, and flights are considered as being in different slots when their time differences mean a change in the ten minute interval (e.g. 09:15 and 09:20)

9. How much does the slot coordination service cost to the airport managing body and the airlines?

The cost of the service is 0,85€ per slot allocated and 0,43€ per schedule facilitated (to be paid by both the airport managing body and the aircraft operator concerned). The services will be invoiced monthly for the slots allocated and the schedules facilitated at the end of each calendar month.

10. Which are the Spanish airports managed by AECFA?
